  • From study to work in Europe: prepare before graduation

Reviewed: 19 October 2026. General information only, not legal or individual immigration advice. Student and graduate routes differ by country and circumstances.

Graduation does not explain your next status automatically

Completing a qualification and obtaining permission for a new activity are separate milestones. A student residence document may have work conditions; it should not be assumed to cover any full-time role after study ends.

The EU Immigration Portal’s student guidance discusses work alongside study and post-study possibilities under the relevant framework. It also makes clear that applications and national conditions matter. Use the destination’s current instructions instead of a universal online promise about staying after graduation.

    Research three stages separately

First, check what work your current student status permits. Second, investigate whether a post-study job-search or other route exists for your situation and what application it requires. Third, identify the permission needed when you accept a particular job.

Ask about timing before your current permission ends. Do not assume an employer’s offer, a pending application or the graduation ceremony extends your status. For uncertainty about lawful stay or work, contact the competent authority or a qualified adviser promptly.

    Make your recruitment profile clear

As practical preparation, explain your course, expected completion date, relevant projects and work experience accurately. Distinguish confirmed qualifications from results still pending. Tell an employer what you know about your work status and what remains to be verified, rather than writing “unrestricted work rights” without a basis.

If your target profession is regulated, investigate recognition or licensing separately. A local qualification can help describe your skills, but an article cannot decide whether all professional or immigration requirements are met.
