A route for qualified employment, not a universal European pass
The European Commission describes the EU Blue Card as a route for highly qualified workers from outside the EU. Relevant conditions include a qualifying contract or binding offer, appropriate qualifications or recognized professional skills where applicable, and the destination’s salary requirements.
The scheme does not apply in Denmark or Ireland. Other countries can also have national routes for qualified employment. That makes comparison more useful than assuming the Blue Card is always the correct option.
Read the national conditions before comparing offers
Do not use one country’s salary threshold for another. Check the official destination page for the current threshold, contract conditions, qualification evidence, insurance and application procedure. Where a role is regulated, professional recognition or licensing needs its own investigation.
As a practical preparation step, compare your offer against the official checklist: employer identity, role, work location, pay, hours and contract duration. Ask the employer to clarify any mismatch in writing rather than altering documents yourself.
Understand who issues the card
Only the relevant Member State can issue an EU Blue Card. A commercial website, recruiter or intermediary cannot issue one or guarantee approval. Confirm whether you or the employer submits the application under that country’s procedure and keep a copy of the official instructions used.
The Blue Card can have conditional mobility and family benefits, but these are not an unrestricted right to start any job in any country. Employer changes and moves require fresh checks. Use the Commission’s country links rather than relying on a general online summary.
