  • Relocating with family: questions to ask before accepting a job

Reviewed: 19 October 2026. General information only, not legal or individual immigration advice. Family eligibility and rights must be checked for each person and route.

Include family research at the beginning

A job opportunity can look very different once family arrangements are considered. Your permission to work does not, by itself, explain whether a partner or child can join you, when they may apply or what activities they can undertake.

The EU Immigration Portal’s family guidance describes conditional family reunification and directs readers to national rules. Some categories, such as the EU Blue Card, have their own arrangements. Avoid borrowing one category’s benefits for another.

Build a separate family question list

Ask the official authority which relatives may qualify, which evidence is required and whether applications can be submitted together. Check any requirements concerning resources, accommodation, insurance or relationship documents under the actual destination route.

Ask separately about a partner’s permission to work. Do not assume it matches the main worker’s rights or begins on the same date. If you have questions involving custody, consent or complex family circumstances, obtain qualified advice rather than relying on a general recruitment article.

Coordinate practical plans without assuming approval

As a planning step, compare possible move dates, temporary accommodation, school enquiries and insurance arrangements. Identify which decisions can wait until official outcomes are known. Avoid treating a school place or housing booking as evidence that immigration permission will follow.

Ask the employer what relocation support, if any, is offered and request its scope in writing. Do not infer family support from a vacancy that merely mentions “international relocation.”

Our candidate information can help you frame an initial recruitment enquiry without sharing sensitive family documents.

Your next step: Contact ErdoBar with your professional goals and broad relocation preferences. Use the destination authority or a qualified adviser for family eligibility questions. No family permit, job or relocation support is guaranteed.
