  • Schengen visa or work permit? Understand the difference

Travel permission and employment permission answer different questions

A Schengen short-stay visa concerns entry for a short, temporary visit. The European Commission’s visa guidance describes a limit of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, subject to the visa and applicable conditions. It is not a general authorization to take employment throughout Europe.

For work, identify the national requirements for the activity, duration and destination. A country may use a work permit, a residence permit, a long-stay visa or a combination of documents. The label on one document does not answer every question about another.

Do not treat a visit as a relocation plan

If an employer invites you for an interview, describe the purpose of the trip accurately and check the appropriate visitor requirements. If the employer wants you to begin work, ask separately which permission allows that activity and when it becomes effective. Short assignments can also require national checks; “less than 90 days” does not automatically mean no work authorization is needed.

Do not assume that entering as a visitor lets you switch to a worker route inside the country. Application location and switching conditions depend on the national route and your circumstances.

    Check the right authority

Use the EU Immigration Portal for work-related country guidance and the destination’s consulate for entry procedures. Make a written list of your intended activity, work location, proposed dates and employer before asking questions. Avoid relying on someone else’s travel history as evidence that your work is permitted.
