  • Netherlands highly skilled migrant route: questions for candidates

Reviewed: 19 October 2026. General information only, not legal or individual immigration advice. This is a starting guide; use the IND’s current information for your situation.

    The employer’s status matters

The Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service, or IND, states that the highly skilled migrant route requires a residence permit and that only an employer recognized by the IND can apply for it. A company being willing to hire internationally is therefore not the same as confirming that it can use this particular route.

This does not mean every Netherlands job or work-permit category follows the same process. Identify the route by its official name rather than using “sponsorship” as a catch-all description.

Ask focused questions before making commitments

Ask the employer which Dutch legal entity will employ you, whether that entity is recognized for the proposed route, and who will handle the application. Clarify the role, work location, contract and pay in writing. If a recruiter is involved, establish which questions should be answered directly by the employer.

The IND’s guidance adapts to personal circumstances, including nationality and existing residence status. Use the official questions yourself; an online article should not preselect your answers or imply that everyone follows the same entry procedure.

Verify changing conditions at the source

Do not rely on a salary figure copied from an old blog post. Check the current IND requirements for the relevant category and circumstances. Also distinguish immigration permission from any professional recognition needed for the role.

For planning, keep a list of employer documents, candidate documents and unresolved questions. Ask what happens if the proposed start date changes, but do not assume that the employer can guarantee an authority’s decision date.
