  • Moving between Schengen countries for work: what to verify

Reviewed: 19 October 2026. General information only, not legal or individual immigration advice. This guide does not establish a right to travel, reside or work.

Start by identifying the kind of move

Are you taking a short visit, moving your home to another country, or beginning a job there? These are different questions. The Schengen system facilitates travel, but it is not a single employment-permit system for every non-EU national.

A residence document from one Schengen country should not be presented to a new employer as proof of unrestricted work rights across the whole area. Its travel conditions and employment conditions need separate checks.

Ask about the destination, not only your current country

The Commission’s guidance for people already in the EU explains that movement depends on the permit, planned stay and receiving country. Certain categories can have mobility arrangements, but conditions still apply.

For the EU Blue Card, for example, moving to another participating state involves specific requirements. Do not generalize those arrangements to every worker or every Schengen destination.

Prepare questions the authority can answer

Record your nationality, current document type, issuing country, proposed new country, intended activity and dates. Ask whether a new application, notification or other approval is required and when work may start. If your family will move too, check their position separately.

Keep travel planning distinct from the employment transition. Permission to visit an office is not necessarily permission to join its payroll or work there regularly. For recurring cross-border or remote-working arrangements, obtain destination-specific guidance rather than treating them as ordinary tourism.

Your next step: Contact ErdoBar about your target role and destination. Ask the receiving country’s authority about mobility and permission to work; a recruitment enquiry does not guarantee a vacancy or authorization.
