Intra-company transfers to Europe: what makes them different?

Reviewed: 19 October 2026. General information only, not legal or individual immigration advice. This overview does not establish eligibility for any transfer route.

A transfer is not simply a new job abroad

The EU Immigration Portal describes an intra-corporate transferee category for certain employees temporarily transferred from a company outside the EU to a related unit. It addresses managers, specialists and trainee employees under specified conditions.

That is different from applying to an unrelated employer. A vacancy with a multinational company does not automatically make a new recruit eligible for a transfer route.

Ask your employer to define the assignment

Clarify the employing company, host unit, work location, role, assignment duration and expected return arrangements. The official guidance discusses evidence of the company relationship, prior employment, qualifications, contract and assignment terms. The precise requirements and submission process must be checked for the destination.

As an organizational step, ask HR to distinguish the existing employment contract from the international assignment letter. Check that the role, pay and dates are explained consistently. If two offices give different instructions, ask the company to resolve the discrepancy before documents are submitted.

Check every destination involved

An assignment covering more than one country can involve additional mobility conditions. Do not assume that a transfer document issued in one country authorizes unrestricted work at every European office.

Also separate business travel from the actual assignment. A meeting at a group office and taking up a temporary operational role can raise different questions. Describe the real activity to the authority or a qualified adviser rather than choosing a label because it sounds simpler.

The EU and national responsibility guide explains why destination authorities remain essential even where an EU framework exists.
